Ongoing Reflection

Here will be a separate section where I keep a log of what work I was doing on each day (Less of a hassle this way)

WEEK 1

DAY 1- 13/09/2021

First (Proper) day back at college is going to be used for time to establish our initial ideas and thoughts of what artist and what song we would like to use for our own video!

DAY 2- 14/09/2021

Today we spent time researching more about how music videos are used to the artists benefit aswell as doing a Adobe Premier Pro key-framing tutorial with our teacher sam.

We had some resources from the internet to put into the timeline and create a short animation.

Below is a screenshot of my premier pro window mid-editing!

The key framing task was a great idea purely because after a long summer away it was essential to refresh our minds and to go back to some of the basics of editing in Adobe software. This session was huge help to not only my confidence in my ability to edit but also to give me something to work on to keep my mind occupied while also thinking about the main project at hand.

FINAL VIDEO OUTCOME-

DAY 3 RESEARCH- TRACKING SHOTS IN MEDIA

Wednesday the 15th of September was a session where we did a small recap on how the tracking shot was made and how they are used in various media platforms. We watched a few music videos with tracking shots and I ended up using some film scenes as examples of how tracking shots are done to create an immersive experience.

PRACTISE MUSIC VIDEO/ TRACKING TASK.

ABOVE IS A PRACTISE MUSIC VIDEO OLLIE, LEWIS, FRANKIE AND MYSELF CREATED JUST TO GET A FEEL FOR HOW OUR OWN MUSIC VIDEO SHOULD COME OUT.

NOTE- VIDEO IS NOT A REPRESENTATION OF MY FINAL PROJECT OUTCOME.

We used a few shots including a medium shot and a tracking shot but together with Adobe Effects, the right lighting and lyrics I feel we created a great piece of work to put in our blogs that will help our work propel forward and upwards in quality.

Personally I feel the use of adobe effects like the "ECHO" effect and changing the SATURATION was a good and creative idea that really separated and elevated our video above peoples expectations of what our video would be.

ROLES- ACTOR- LEWIS

             CAMERA- OLLIE

             EDITOR- FRANKIE

            DIRECTOR- ZAC

I felt we worked really well as a team and produced a great practise music video!

WEEK 2

THURSDAY 16th OF SEPTEMBER.

This was our first pure online session of the academic year and it went like this, We began by doing again another little refresher of what music videos are but we then dived into different MUSIC VIDEO STYLES & RECORD LABEL TYPES. This online session was great for me personally as it allowed me to put my head down and focus on the work at hand.

I began by writing in a document all my notes and then transferred them onto my web node research page.

TUESDAY 21st OF SEPTEMBER.

On the morning of Tuesday the 21st, Our tutor Paul gave us a mini Premier Pro editing task to complete which involved us making a high pace music video to clips and music that had been given to us. It was up to us to make variations of each others and see what we could come up with! I feel this was a good session and good lesson idea as it allowed me to once again practise on a software that I will need while finishing my actual music video! On the other hand, Personally I feel the clips that were provided did not suit the music track but thats good for pushing us to our creative limits.

BLACK AND WHITE VIDEO PRACTISE- DAY AFTER

Using the same footage, we was tasked to create a mix between normal colours and monochrome colours as an experiment to see if we could possibly use black and white in our final video.

Below is a screenshot from the editing process during this task... If you look closely you can actually see a bunch of unused markers on the timeline that forgot to remove. This task did not take long at all roughly 15 mins but its a good task to give us some more time to fidget about with the software! You can also see the actual effect I used which is called "MONOCHROME PUNCH"

PREMIER PRO COLOUR TASKS-

These tasks were done on the day of the 22nd of September, Our teacher Paul gave us 2 different tutorials to complete which included editing colour saturation and isolating colours from the background... I feel these tutorials will be extremely helpful for me in the long run as I will be able to use them in my actual final video.

Screen grabs of the process can be seen on the research page!

WEEK 3- CONTINUING RESEARCH AND PREMIER PRO TASKS.

TUESDAY 28th OF SEPTEMBER

On this day, our class was tasked with editing a multicamera setup video of a 2 man band playing a country song, we had 3 different angles to choose from and put them in any order of our choice! This is my final edit of the video, I believe the reason for this task was for us to practise switching between camera angles and that we could really use this technique when it comes to our final music video!

Below is a screengrab from the editing process.

Here is a short multi-camera task that a group consisting of Myself, Dan Fox, Sam Skeates, Lewis Allen, Sohaib and Oli. We made a fake game show and used a multi-camera set up to film.

this was a way to practise filming a multi-camera set up.

SPLIT SCREEN EDITING TASK-

Below is a video that I edited on the 29th of September 2021 in our morning session, Our tutor Paul had tasked us with re-making the music video to "Before you accuse me" (which is the same music video my previous editing task was for). But instead of utilising the multi- camera set up to edit we instead used a tool in Premier Pro that allowed us to split the screen down the middle so we can show one shot on one side and vice-versa.

The reason I chose these clips again was because I felt comfortable using clips that I had already spent time with.

And of course, below is a screen grab mid process!

Mid way through the editing I noticed the man on the left had half his head cut off due to the split in the screen, but I managed to alter and revert that problem back and finish the editing with a satisfactory split.

MUSIC VIDEO RECREATION #2- 29th September

For this practise music video, our group used TPL PLUGGED IN Which is a drill song. The music video is a performance style music video switching between cameras and also using a blue colour pallet instead of the deep red for the other music video we did for a practise run.

We edited together as a group and we decided to include the technique of SPLIT SCREEN because we had learned this skill the exact day of filming and we also changed the COLOUR GRADIENT.

Overall I think once again being able to do a practise video is a great way for us to just get experience using new techniques we acquired over the course of the year and in this case we used a technique we learned the very same day!

October 11th 2021 update

On the Wednesday the 6th of October 2021, I actually unfortunately lost my Web node and was unable to upload any work on to it for a few days which really hindered me keeping up to date with my work however thankfully I managed to contact the web node customer service and was able to get the website back!

Now I am able to upload the Practical tasks that our class had done the previous week!

MIRROR TASK- On premier pro, we was taught how to use the "Mirror" effect in a practise video as a way that we can adapt our editing skills as well as our broadening our effects capabilities.

CC LIGHT RAY TASK- This effect was made in Adobe After effects and makes the "shine" of videos greater, it is great for emphasising specific objects in a frame.

MOVING TEXT TASK- This effect consists of writing lyrics on a sheet of paper and importing it on a background in Adobe and changing the brightness and moving image and this is a way to make visually pleasing lyrics in a video.

"TRIPPY" VIDEO EFFECT- In After Effects, there is a setting that when applied to a video, it creates and effect of a drunken distorted view, This sort of effect is used often in music videos and film to visually portray how influenced a character is.

Canva Storyboard Practise task

Our teacher Paul tasked us with creating a storyboard for an already existing song... I chose the DAVE song called "Verdansk".

we created the storyboard on a website called "Canva", This free to use website had all the tools I needed to create an accurate storyboard for some of the visual scenes that can be found in the video. Below is the storyboard I created and the reason for it being a video is due to me using some stock videos I found on "Canva" and I implemented them into the storyboard to get a better picture of what the scene looks like visually and tonally.

The Tone of the original video is quite dark and groggy with some deep thought provoking scenes, Watch the original DAVE-VERDANSK music video following the link down below!

FRAME RATE

In the afternoon lesson on the 12th of October, Sam taught our class about the importance of frame rate and how different forms of media use frame rate as a stylistic choice or as way to exaggerate certain features, with this in mind he gave us a camera in groups of 4 and set us out to record our own footage including different frame rates to see how they can alter a scene... The video below is the result of that lesson.

13th of October 2021

Tracing Light Effect

Our class made a light tracing effect using Adobe After Effects in order to make the visual element of a video more appealing, this was done by using the brush tool and choosing an bright colour to paint a tracer around the subject of the video which in this case was a dancer. The effect I feel came off alright but was a tiny bit rushed... If I had taken more time with it I feel it would of come out smoother but this is a practise for our final video editing!

Below is a screen grab of the Adobe After Effects software after I had finished rendering the final edit.

Line Tracing effect

Like the tracing light effect, this effect was created in After Effects too! It allows the user to highlight a certain thing in the video, for this example; its the box behind the man

PRACTICAL TASK- TRACERS

Sohaib and Myself was tasked to use our knowledge from the prior tasks to create our own short clip that features tracers and thats exactly what we did! I made him dance to a bit of 50 Cent and we edited our own separate clips and added effects in Adobe After Effects, Below is the final result!

Green Screen Tutorial

Early in the initial idea cycle of this project I thought about using a green screen within my music video, after a long summer I had actually forgotten some of the basics to keying in backgrounds and working with green screens so our tutor Paul gave us a mini tutorial to help regain some of our knowledge of editing green screen so the video below was my take on the already pre-made tutorial he had created.

Green Screen Tutorial 2- Corner Pinning

Like the first tutorial, this one is about mapping backgrounds to other moving images. For this video, I implemented and added 1) the woman and 2) the car image on the screen on the right. This is a good way to practise working with a green screen and editing.

October 20th 2021

Pre-Production begins

Pre- production work are set pieces of paperwork that are needed to be created before the main production stage starts, This is good project design as it allows me to picture and practise exactly what I want from my music video such as camera angles, locations and pin-pointing certain risks from each location. Personally, the most important pre-production document is actually the main proposal and shot list as the proposal is the overview of project which is good to go back to after completion to see if your vision was somewhat completed.

Filming begins

Production began on my music video project on November 10th, this day was my first day of filming where I filmed the "performance" segment of my music video which includes a vast array of outfits and coloured lighting. I think that getting the "performance" section filmed first was an advantage for me as it allows me to spend the remainder of my production time to film the locations outside of college which will not need as much time spent on because the main segments of the video are fast paced cuts through the performance section with some quick cuts too outside.

NOVEMBER 20th 2021

Filming wraps and post-production begins

The last day of shooting for me was an emotional one... On the 20th me and my friend Aron went to Easthampstead church to film the last few scenes of my music video! It only took roughly 20 mins to film everything as we was on a tight schedule due to the sun going down much quicker in the fall season.

In my opinion I think filming went well and left me with a good amount of time to finish editing and evaluating my work!
